Understanding Compulsive Sexual Behavior
Compassionate, non-judgmental support for patterns that feel out of control
What Is Compulsive Sexual Behavior?
Compulsive sexual behavior (also known as sex addiction or pornography addiction) refers to a persistent pattern of intense, repetitive sexual urges or behaviors, including compulsive pornography use, that feels difficult to control and causes distress or interferes with important areas of your life, such as work, relationships, or your sense of self.
Frequency alone does not define this pattern. Many people have a high libido or a regular interest in sex without it causing them distress. Compulsive sexual behavior becomes a clinical concern when the behavior feels driven rather than chosen, continues despite negative consequences, and is difficult to stop even when you want to.
What This Can Look Like
Urges that feel persistent or hard to control
Using sexual behavior to cope with stress, anxiety, or difficult emotions
A pattern that has escalated over time despite wanting to stop
Strain, secrecy, or shame in your relationships because of the behavior
Repeated, unsuccessful efforts to cut back or stop
Our Approach to Treatment
Treatment is individualized, non-shaming, and trauma-informed. Rather than focusing only on stopping a behavior, your therapist will work with you to understand what the behavior is doing for you emotionally, such as regulating stress, avoiding difficult feelings, or coping with earlier experiences, and to build other ways of meeting those needs.
When helpful, treatment may also include your partner, particularly when the behavior has affected trust or connection in your relationship.
