Incorporating Creative Arts into Therapy
Using creative expression to support your therapeutic work
What Does This Look Like in Treatment?
Some experiences and emotions are difficult to put into words. At Family Legacy Therapy, our clinicians may incorporate creative and expressive techniques, such as drawing, collage, sand tray, movement, poetry, music, and story writing, into individual, couples, or family sessions to support the deeper work of therapy.
Please note that we do not hold any creative arts certification. Creative arts are used as a complementary tool within your broader treatment, guided by the clinical approaches your therapist is trained in, rather than as a stand-alone creative art therapy modality.
Why Use Creative Expression in Therapy?
Creative activities can offer another way in when words feel out of reach. They can help externalize an internal experience, making it easier to look at, talk about, and work through. For some clients, especially children, creative expression can feel more natural and less intimidating than direct conversation.
What Can This Approach Help With?
Difficulty putting feelings or experiences into words
Processing trauma or difficult memories
Working with children or teens in individual or family sessions
Stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm
Building self-awareness and self-expression
What to Expect
Creative activities are introduced within your regular therapy sessions when your therapist feels they may support your goals, not as a separate program. No artistic skill or experience is needed. Your therapist will guide the process and remain focused on your clinical goals throughout.
